My creative journey started as it does with so many.... having the desire to create my own items for my home... experimenting with different styles and mediums... finding out real quick that following directions from patterns and trying to create the "right way", was never going to be my way.
So I said to hell with the "right way" and did my own thing... that led me to start a home based pattern business "Hickety Pickety" around 1986...
In 2008 I was totally burned out with the pattern business.... I did what most would never want to do... work for someone else... I became a poker dealer. For the first few years of dealing I felt like I was on vacation... being your own boss is great, but ya'll never work harder if you are going to be successful.
I didn't create for 6 years. In 2014 I started having the urge to create again.... I went back to what I knew... creating art using fabric, paper mache, cross stitch, punch needle, wood.... even taught myself how to knit and crocheted miles and miles of scarves, ponchos, etc....
But, I just wasn't finding my creative mojo... then I saw a video on YouTube in 2015 about Mixed Media Art, I started buying supplies ... I was finally excited about creating again...I mean REALLY excited!!
Folks kept telling me to take classes and I'd learn new techniques....how to draw faces....how to do this or that the "right way"....or a "better way" or an "easier way"...but, I want my art to be done in "my own way".... the 'FUNKED UP' way!
I felt my style of art was different from what I was seeing online... I view my style as being very whimsical and naive, but funky ... so I started calling it 'FUNKED UP ART'!
If you're drawn to 'realistic~perfect' faces and coloring inside the lines... then perhaps my 'FUNKED UP ART' will not be for you... BUT, if you're a lover of Whimsical~Naive & Funky....then you're in the right place!
I do hope that you will check back often to see how my 'FUNKED UP ART' is revolving. It just shows that even at almost 60 yrs. old... it's never too late to learn a new exciting way to create art....since finding my creative mojo once again... I now only deal poker once a week!
Hope you will visit me often!
